Robert's Story
While I was incarcerated, I was confronted with my bi-polar illness. Working
with a terrific psychiatrist, I began to unravel the distorted tapestry
of my past.
After going home, I continued therapy. However, because I was unwilling
to take medication, my life continued to be a roller coaster. After getting
married for the third time, I experienced two more severe manic episodes.
The hospital declared in no uncertain terms that I must take my medication;
it was that or the state hospital.
I agreed to take my medication and do whatever else I must do to remain
well. I take my medication, I see a therapist, I see a psychiatrist, and
I go to a support group. My life has turned completely around and I am
ever so grateful.
I am currently the Executive Director of a Consumer Satisfaction Team
and am preparing to enter graduate school to study for an M.A. in Mental
Health Counseling. My goal is to get a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology so
that I can help others and give back all the help I have received during
my illness.
